Ahoy thar matey! Get yourself out on the high seas and explore the Caribbean paradise found just beyond Cartagena's sheltered bay.
Avoid the throngs of tourists and chart your own course by hiring your own boat for the day (or days).
You can charter yachts and catamarans manned by experienced sailors, powerboats and cruisers or simple motorboats. Prices aren't super cheap.. but get together a parche or group to share costs and they are definitely affordable.
Get in touch with your dates and requirements and we'll hook you up with all the info or peruse some of the options below. We don't include all the boats we work with below (some boat owners prefer not to have their boats publicly listed on websites) so if you don't see something you like, be sure to still write because we have other options up our sleeves.
Travelling solo or in a couple? We can potentially tee you up with others so you can share costs.. let us know if you are open to this and hopefully the dates would work out for another enquiry. Or check out this Island Hopping option.

PRIVATE POWER BOAT HIRE
For when Fleetwood Mac is blaring "You can go your own wayyyy" .. here are some options. You can choose what time you depart (between 8-11am), and where you go (we have suggested itineraries to help).
All boats include:
- A full tank of fuel for the day
- Captain and assistant
- Sound system
- fridge or cooler (includes ice)
Boats don't include:
- Transportation from your hotel to the marina or dock and back
- Other drinks
- Meals/snacks (but these can easily be brought along or purchased yourselves in the islands)
- Snorkeling equipment
- Towels
- extra hours outside of 8-5pm
Things you might want to add:
- Any of the above
- English-speaking guide to translate, negotiate prices, show you the best places to visit etc = 250,000 pesos per day
- Snorkeling equipment = 25,000 pesos per person
- Towel 12,000 pesos pp
- Lunch and fresh fruit (see options below for prices)
- an extra hour or two cruising around the bay at sunset to keep the party going (ask for a quote for the per hour add-on, subject to availability)
- VIP extras upon request
Things to know:
Apart from the public beach of Playa Blanca on Isla Baru, and Playa Linda on Isla Tierra Bomba.. everywhere else you can disembark is privately owned. This means they will require you at least purchase a drink or snack to be able to access their property. Some places require the purchase of a daypass or have a minimum spend. You may also design an itinerary where you just stay on your boat or in the water and don't actually disembark anywhere you have to pay.
Sunset/Evening hire
For a different experience, consider hiring a private boat in the early evening for a couple of hours of touring around the bay. It's calmer and it's also a lot more affordable. Bring along some wine and cheese for a really special way to say goodbye to the day. Ask us for a quote.
Itineraries:
(Let us know if you want more party or more chill/less people)
Usual itineraries for a day rental of most of the boats would be:
Depart around 8.30/9am
Head first to the Rosario Islands (1 hour to arrive),
Here you can:
tour around the different islands, swim in "La Piscina" or other quieter spots, snorkel (there's a pretty decent reef with good fish life),
Snack at Isla Champetu (love their crab arepas) and/or Isla Fragata (or lunch if you are already hungry), go to isla arena (bendita) white sand beach (you will need to at least buy a beer or drink to be able to access their private island)
Tour around and see the fancy private houses and tiny islands
If you want party, we would recommend you instead lunch or drink at Bora Bora beach club (it is overpriced but at the moment it's the biggest miami-style party in the islands).. they will require you to pre-book and pay a sunbed (starting from 100,000 pesos, for the ability to access the beach club.
Next it's Cholón
If you want party, you will probably stay here for a while. It is a crazy scene, busier on weekends, with boats anchoring to each other while lots of people dance in the water and grind to reggaeton. The vendors are extra aggressive and will do their best to rip you off, so we would not recommend buying anything at all here unless you are desperate/great at negotiation and pre-fix all prices.
If you are not looking for this kind of party, you might not want to stop here, just pause on your way past to view the spectacle.
For a great lunch option, with fixed menu pricing and the ability to pay by card, just in front of Cholón, we would recommend Restaurante Aura. Bookings are essential.
Next you can head to the island of Baru
The most famous and popular beach here is called Playa Blanca. It's increasingly crowded and full of vendors but has one of the nicest beaches.. there are some more rustic lunch options (we would recommend Ocean Blue where you can sit on the second level and avoid the vendors whilst enjoying the great view, or a great seafood barbecue or Paella with Spanish cook Jose "El Tio" at Banana Beach club another stylish option is Nena Beach .
Instead you may prefer visiting Playa Agua which is a quieter location on Baru. Here they offer the typical rustic lunch and you will need to pay by cash only.
For a more luxurious and exclusive experience, we would recommend having lunch at Sabai Beach Resort. Located right at the tip of Baru island it is actually further out than Cholon. If you book for lunch only, you will just pay what you consume, but if you want to use their sunbeds or infinity edge pool there is a fee of 120,000 pesos pp.
Next is Island Tierra Bomba
Tierra Bomba is the closest island to the mainland of Cartagena and has a number of popular beach clubs and restaurants. Here we would recommend Blue Apple or Amare as having the best food and drinks menus. We also love the more recently opened Marlin which has great food that is more typical Cartagena menu, plus a nicer sea for swimming in addition to pool and sunbeds. if you aren't super hungry early on and are ok with a late lunch, these options would make a great choice.
Home by 5pm
(how much you get through depends on what time you leave in the morning and how long you want to spend at each stop)
If the captain determines that weather conditions would dictate returning earlier you may need to come back into the protected bay waters earlier.
Lunch?
We've included references to this above, but your itinerary will also depend where you decide to have lunch. Most lunch offerings are the rustic but delicious fried fish with coconut rice and patacón.
Restaurants like Fenix, Amare or Blue Apple on Tierra Bomba, or Aura in front of Cholon, have a much wider variety of Mediterranean cuisine, great cocktails and you can pay by card.
Island Champetu is a great private island option that is only open as a restaurant for private boats. Grabbing lunch or a mid morning snack here gives you access to their private and secluded location.
Some of the other private beaches will enable access if you buy lunch, for example Fragata, Islabela.
Nena beach or Banana Beach are colourful, fun options on Playa Blanca.
Sabai is luxurious and exclusive with a great seafood focused menu.
We will need to make reservations at any of the beach clubs in advance.
Bora Bora would also require you to pre-purchase a sunbed.
No matter the option you choose, factor in at least 1 hour for your food to be ready. Island time, sorry. For those who want to maximise time, you can request the menu from us and pre-order to speed things up.
You might also opt to pack your own picnic, in which case we can discuss catering options. We have a cute health food place that does wraps and paninis, fruit and yogurt and desserts at affordable prices for example, and they will deliver to the dock. Or you can download an application called RAPPI and order your delivery straight to the dock the morning of takeoff. This works for drinks and snacks too.
For larger groups we've had a lot of amazing feedback from the catering by Noleth which is focused on delicious Lebanese/Arabic flavours like chicken and almond rice, baba ganoush, hummus, kibbeh, vine leaf and cabbage rolls etc This is a perfect catering option because everything keeps really well, is easy to share, and includes vegetarian selections.
For VIPers, we can arrange for a private chef to join your boat and cater your day.
Please keep in mind: whilst hiring a private boat gets you the flexibility of choosing your own itinerary and visiting multiple places, you will still have to stick to more or less the above loop. So say you started with a stop in the Rosario Islands, then you want to go to Barú for lunch, you can’t then request to go back to a different place in the Rosario Islands. That ship has sailed (pun very much intended #sorrynotsorry) . We understand it can be confusing trying to plan an itinerary in advance when you’ve never been there and you have the advice of about 20 different friends ringing in your ears, but we recommend keeping your itinerary simple as above or creating one with us before you set out so there’s no misunderstanding or lost in translation on the day.
It might also be a good investment to pay to have an English speaking host to accompany your boat for the day for 250,000 pesos.

TYPICAL ITINERARY
Departing the marina about 9am, tour around the Rosario Islands and snorkel there if you're interested. There's a sunken aeroplane which many like to dive at (it's 6 metres down so for strong swimmers only) , and the ruins of a former mansion that many (falsely) claim belonged to a former associate of Pablo Escobar.
Later head to tiny beaches around Barú. A visit to Cholón is for those that want to experience more of a party scene.. the locals will offer you food, oysters, drinks etc but be warned, if you don't set prices in advance the costs can soar. Lunch we can make a reservation depending on your priorities (price, speed, basic menu or more extensive, sit down restaurant or eat on the beach). During peak dates reservations are HIGHLY recommended. Jetskis and massages available at Playa Blanca. Massages also available at Blue Apple and Cholon. Depending where and what time you lunch, you might want to get cocktails on your way home at Blue Apple or Fenix or Amare.
You'll head back about 4pm, depending upon weather conditions. The requirement is that you are back to the safety of the calm Bay waters, but if you want to extend your rental, it may be possible to add extra hours to your rental and stay cruising around the Bay.
Lunch suggestions:
On the beach at Playa Blanca - perhaps call your order ahead to save time, takes about 1 hour preparation time otherwise. The specialty is fried fish with coconut rice and fried plantain. This is a rustic option but also super enjoyable. Eating fresh fish with your toes in the sand next to the water always spells vacation to us. Payment will be cash only (unless you opt for Nena Beach)
Isla Champetua - This is a private island and so far quite off the radar.. so take advantage to have a stunning island with great food all to yourself. They don't run their own day passes, so you can only visit via private boat.
Islabela on Isleta (Isla Grande, Rosario Islands) features the typical menu delivered more professionally and where you can pay via card if you need. They include free lunch for your boat captains as long as the reservation is made in advance.
Fragata- Another private island option that is still low-profile.. great service and highly recommended.
Aura - just across from Cholon but private, features the classic seafood focused options of the islands with some Italian options added in for good measure. Can pay by card. Everyone always loves the food.
Cholon- Our chef friends assure us that you can find the best and freshest seafood prepared at Cholon - grilled lobsters, octopus, shrimp and oysters (don't eat the oysters unless you have guts of steel) but we have heard horror stories of astronomically high bills being racked up because prices weren't confirmed upfront. Lunch at Cholon can be a fun option, but we would suggest you pay to have an English speaking guide to go along with you and negotiate and set prices for you. If that all feels too stressful, maybe go for one of the other options. Things definitely can get intense.
Blue Apple- A la carte dining on Tierra Bomba island. Delicious food with beautiful presentation in beach house surrounds. Full wine list and great cocktail menu. Maybe our favourite reason we love Blue Apple's food and drink is that they are committed to making the most sustainable menu choices possible. Products are grown locally, proteins are free-range, selected suppliers pay fair wages and are vetted for equity etc etc. Featuring DJ and fun atmosphere. Often live bands. Can pay by card. If you choose this option you will eat right before returning home because this island is closest to Cartagena. Making a reservation is here is pretty essential .
Fenix- Like Blue Apple, if you choose to lunch at Fenix, it will be the last stop before heading back to Cartagena. Like Blue Apple, Fenix offers a full and delicious a la carte menu, and is a beach club with DJ and fun vibes.
Extras -- if you're a dive enthusiast we can arrange for a Divemaster to accompany you for the day and lead a registered dive, you can book an english speaking host, we can book transport to and from the marina, we can book a picnic or other catering, we can book a bartender to come and create drinks for you all day, we can book DJs, we can go shopping for you for boat supplies, or anything else you can think of we'll do our best!

THINGS TO NOTE
We work with tried and trusted privately owned boat operators to provide a quality standard and service. In some instances we may put you in direct contact with these operators for ease of organising. You won't pay any more by going through Cartagena Connections and we do our best to find you the best prices available without the usual markups.
For all boats you will need to pay a deposit of minimum 50% to secure your reservation at the time of booking. Some boats have different requirements and may ask for more. The balance needs to be received 1-2 days prior to your boat day.
Your safety is the most important consideration. If the boat captains or the port authority decide that the conditions are not favourable, their decision is final.. any monies paid will be refunded or transferred to a different day (your choice).
These prices usually increase during peak seasons. During the famous Balleneras fiesta and during Regatta Cholón, the prices usually double.
During high season (December 15 - January 15), they increase by at least 15%, and increases are set by the boat owners.
