Colombia is a pretty special place; the only country with coastline on both the Pacific and the Caribbean sea, twice-declared the happiest country in the world, 11% of it's terrain covered by National Parks, over 300 different beaches, the second most bio-diverse country (after Brasil which is twice Colombia's size) and the country with the biggest variety of bird life in the entire world.
And it's this last tremendous fact which is on display at Colombia's National Aviary located on Isla Baru, about 50 minutes outside of central Cartagena.
Cartagena's National Aviary is an ambitious project, developed to showcase Colombia's incredible diversity of birdlife. Or if you are like me and more than a little obsessed with the retro tropical chic of flamingos.. you're in luck! There's an entire flock of them! Chowing down on pink crustaceans to make their feathers that rosy shade of wonderful. Yay!
But it's not just for the birds. The park is also a fantastic example of Colombian flora and fauna, serving an important role in the conservation and education, in particular for many species in danger of extinction.
