UPDATE: THEY'RE BACK!!
MUST VISIT. For a 100% guaranteed good time and a giant serving of Cartagena sabor, Bazurto Social Club is your jam.
If this is your first time hearing about this evocative slice of Cartagena culture, the backstory is this beloved bar was an unfortunate victim of covid closures, shutting its doors way back in 2020. Fast forward to March 2024 and we are finally able to welcome them back, and, importantly, re-add Bazurto to the top of our recommendations list. For anyone who knew and loved the original Getsemani bar- fear not, you can expect to find much of the same team, the same charismatic dancers/MCs, same live bands, DJs, menu etc as the original Getsemani location. However now they have all been transplanted to the back patio of Casa Cruxada - located in Plaza Santo Domingo.
So what can you expect?
For starters, it's colourful. Like, really, crammed to the rafters, colourful. The walls are full with examples of Costeño humour and local icons such as Kola Roman and Kid Pambelé.
Things get pretty packed on Friday and Saturday nights from 11pm, so arrive early, stake out a coveted chair, and get stuck into some good local eats. The menu is simple and mostly fried-focused, but you can't go wrong with the famous ceviches, and the black corn carimañolas stuffed with octopus crab are deeeelish. Line your stomach in preparation for a few of the equally tasty Machacao house cocktail and life is good. Thursday nights you get 2 for 1 pepperoni pizzas and the unforgettably named cocktail: Sexo con Doña Elvira en la Playa.
Then there's the music, which is what Bazurto Social Club is really all about. This is one of the very few places in the world you can regularly hear live Champeta music, spliced with some of the country's best tropical DJs. If you've been lucky enough to come along on one of our tours, you've been introduced to the phenomenon that is Champeta music and dance (I may have even demonstrated a few dance steps). Here's where champeta comes to life; gyrating singers, live dance shows (plus free dance classes) and a whole lotta sweaty folk lapping it all up and dancing and singing along.
It all makes for an energetic, fun, unbeatable atmosphere. One in which, if you pause and look at everyone around you, there's not a single face that doesn't have an enormous smile. When you're in Cartagena for the weekend, hop on your caballito and make your way to Bazurto for one of those nights out you just can't find at home. Sabrosura!
COVERCHARGE: 30,000 pesos (free before 10pm) BUT say the secret magic password and you'll pay just 20,000 pesos. Be warned: this is going to be a test of your spanish skills
