RUM EXPERIENCE
The most treasured booty for any good pirate during those seafaring days of the Caribbean wasn't a treasure chest of gold, but a good bottle of rum. Today this caramel coloured plonk continues to keep the locals crazy and rum, or ron as it is called in español, is the national liquor of Colombia.
We have teamed up with Cartagena's best mixologists to offer some very special rum tasting experiences. It's a great activity for bachelor groups, curious couples, foodies, drinkies, or anyone who is looking for an activity that gets them out of that hot sun!
Of the various rum tasting experiences available in Cartagena, we use and recommend 3 options, headed up by different rum-loving experts. The first is with a walking encyclopedia of everything Rum , which is heavier on the science and history, and the other has a more foodie focus with every rum being paired with a small snack or chocolate. The third is rum and chocolate and combines a mix of the science focus and the chocolate lovers focus. There's three different booking forms depending upon which option appeals most, or if you want to receive more information on both you can complete all forms, or email us directly to info@cartagenaconnections.com with your questions, dates, preferences etc. IF you have your own space or air bnb etc, we can also arrange for the rum tasting to take place in your own accommodation.
OPTION 1
The rum tasting (here it's called a "cata", I still don't know why) will talk you through the ingredients, distillery process and creation and brief history of the glorious spirit, then the 5 special rums will be introduced and contrasted while you enjoy your choice of either Colombian rums Ron Caldas Tradicional, Parce Rum 8, Ron Medellin 8, Ron La Hechicera, Ron Dictador 20 or Caribbean rums ( selected by you, subject to availability). This is one of the most thorough explanations of rum by absolute professionals you will encounter. Alternatively you can opt for the more basic rum experience which does not include the distillation aspect featured in the full experience

OPTION 2 (with taste-pairing)
As with the first option, this tasting experience includes an introduction to the world of Colombian and Caribbean rum with a tasting of approximately 8 rums (the approximate is because if you only opt for the top of the top shelf, it will probably be more like 6 or alternatively, if you are interested to include more "rustic" rums, you may end up sampling a lot more. Your host here is also usually very generous on the pour and is very relaxed/encouraging of refills. Your host will then pair different rums with different foodie treats, depending on the characteristics to be enhanced - maybe salty Carimañolas or a rich chocolate truffle. This is a relaxed experience that has the potential to turn into your entire night. If you are trying to decide between the two options, I think it depends how much you want to geek out on detailed information and go indepth with the distilling process. If you need further help choosing, please just shoot us an email.
When?
12noon, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm, 8pm subject to availability
What's included:
a generous pour (and top ups as requested) of an "average" of 8 rums
4 picadas/tapas/chocolate (vegetarian options available)
1.5-2 hours of barman banter
Price 210,000 pesos pp (minimum 2 people)
50% deposit required in advance to secure your booking.
